Dad [eyeing the rock in Jane's hand and wondering if it will be used for good or ill]: Give me the rock and you can have a cookie.
Jane thinks this over and promptly complies. In return, she picks a cookie from the plate.
Jane [now using her body to protect half the cookie not in her mouth]: Can I have my rock back, Dad?
[Editor's note: She really talks like this. It's unnerving for a two-year-old to enunciate this well.]

Sometimes I wonder if it's my faulty memory that my children talked that well really young...and then I read your blog, and their journals. It's strange for such a small body to communicate so well :)
